Stars Select Scott Glennie with 8th Overall Pick

picture-2The Dallas Stars drafted C/RW Scott Glennie with their first pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.  While it came as a surprise to many in the Dallas area, and he may not be a name that was thrown around a lot before the draft, he’s a name with rising stock.  He finished #7 overall in the 2009 Central Scouting Ratings, after dipping to #12 mid-year.  Add to that factor that the Stars have a serious lack of right-handed shots on the team, and Glennie is a bit less of a surprise.  Here is what NHL Director of Central Scouting, E.J. McGuire had to say about Glennie:

“Scott Glennie was mislabeled earlier in the year as perhaps being only a finisher for often linemate Brayden Schenn. Yet Scott took matters into his own hands with an equal number of goals and assists and contributed greatly this season with a power forward type attitude. Glennie might remind the fan of NHL players with power forward abilities coming off the wall like Jonathan Cheechoo and Jonathan Toews — that kind of offensive ability.”

Most of the stuff I’m reading about Glennie suggests that he won’t be ready for “prime time” this next season, and the Dallas Stars’ Director of Amateur Scouting confirmed with the DMN’s Mike Heika that Glennie would be returned to his junior team for at least the next year.  Many feel that if he’s given the time to mature and progress, Scott Glennie could be a very solid pick for the Stars for years to come.
