The Amarillo Gorillas took home both weekly league awards in the Central Hockey League this week – the Player and Goaltender of the Week. Forward Joe Guenther was the skater bringing home the honors, with five goals and two assists through three games. Meanwhile, goaltender Mike Brown won the award given to netminders every week. Brown played in two of the three games the Gorillas, stopping all but one goal. Here is the press release from the CHL.

(Tempe, Arizona) – The Central Hockey League announced today that the recipients for the Oakley CHL Player and Goaltender of the Week for the period ending October 18th, 2009 are forward Joe Guenther and goaltender Mike Brown, both of the Amarillo Gorillas. The first player and goaltender of the week awards of the season go as a sweep to the undefeated Amarillo Gorillas (3-0).
Guenther helped push the Gorillas into first place in the Southern Conference with a seven point week (5-2=7). The veteran had points in all three Gorillas wins and finished with a league leading +7 plus/minus rating. The Buffalo, New York native saved his best game of the week for last scoring the game winning goal and tallying another goal and two assists on top of that in Amarillo’s win on Sunday against Mississippi. Guenther also scored the game winning goal in the Gorillas 2-1 victory over Odessa on Saturday night.
Brown wins the first goaltender of the week award this season after going 2-0 on the week with wins versus Wichita and Odessa. The Baldwinsville, New York native allowed just one goal on the week stopping 60 of 61 shots (.984). He earned his first shutout of the season on Friday making 18 saves in a 5-0 win over the Thunder. After opening weekend, Brown leads the CHL with two wins and 0.50 goals against average.
In recognition of their achievements, both Guenther and Brown will receive a special gift from Oakley.
