The Dallas Stars announced today they had signed center Toby Petersen to a two-year contract extension worth $1.55 million. The 1.55 number seems to be the magic one of late, as it’s identical to the two-year deal the Stars signed Tom Wandell for last week. Petersen is a gritty, hard-hitting third or fourth line center, so the money is great for this kind of role player. He’s a good locker room guy, too, and is familiar with the team, having been a Star since 2007. The team’s release is below:

Frisco, Tex. – Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the hockey club has signed center Toby Petersen to a two-year contract extension worth $1.55 million ($750,000 first year, $800,000 second year). This extension puts Petersen under contract through the 2011-12 season.
“Toby Petersen’s character and work ethic are the type of attributes we want in our players,” said Nieuwendyk. “He is a very versatile forward that can play throughout your lineup. He is a good example of the type of professional we want on the Dallas Stars hockey club.”
Petersen, 31, has played in 75 games so far this season for Dallas, setting a new career high in goals with nine and recording five assists. He has played in 295 career NHL games over six seasons, tallying 69 points (29g, 40a).
The native of Minneapolis, MN spent the 2007-08 season in the AHL with the Iowa Stars where he was named the MVP of the club, collecting 51 points (21g, 30a) in 63 games. He was also named MVP of the Iowa Stars in 2005-06. Petersen played 138 games over four years at Colorado College, recording 59 goals and 69 assists. He was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team his freshman year after notching 38 points (17g, 21a) in 40 games.
The Dallas Stars will face the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow night at American Airlines Center at 7:30 CT (TV: Fox Sports Southwest, Radio: Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket).
