SAN ANTONIO, TX – Captain Maxime Fortunus and veteran Toby Petersen each scored goals and goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp made 18 saves to record the victory in his first ever game in North American as the Texas Stars defeated the San Antonio Rampage 2-1 Saturday night at AT&T Center.
Just days after being named the new Stars captain, Maxime Fortunus started leading by example as he scored Texas’ first goal of the season. The defenseman took a pass from Cody Eakin and blasted a slap shot from the blue line off the inside of the right post and into the net at 4:49 of the first period to give the Stars a 1-0. Later in the period Toby Petersen doubled the lead as he beat goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris with a shot from the high slot at 16:07, assisted by Jordie Benn.
Texas carried the play for much of the second period, out-shooting their hosts 12-5 and nearly scoring several times on their three power play attempts of the frame, but could not add to their lead.
The Stars had more power play chances in the third period and continued their dominance in the shots-on-goal department. It appeared they were on their way to a shutout until the final minute of regulation. David Shore collect a loose puck amidst a scramble in the low slot and gave San Antonio a breath of life with a goal at 19:03. This sparked a frantic final minute of play as the Rampage pulled their goaltender, but they failed to find the equalizer as Texas held on for the 2-1 victory.
Cristopher Nilstorp earn his first win in his first AHL game by stopping 18-of-19 shots, while Dov Grumet-Morris had 32 saves on 34 shots in the losing effort for San Antonio. The Stars out-shot the Rampage 34-19 and went 0-for-8 on the power play; San Antonio was 0-for-5 on the man-advantage.
The Stars return home for their 2012-13 home opener on Sunday, October 14th as they host the Charlotte Checkers for a 7:00 pm faceoff at Cedar Park Center. 2012-13 season seat packages are on sale now.
