Boise, ID – The NHL’s Dallas Stars have reassigned forward Austin Smith to the Idaho Steelheads from Texas of the American Hockey League. It marks the second time this season Smith has been sent to Idaho.
Idaho (ECHL) and Texas (AHL) are the primary development affiliates of the Dallas Stars.
Smith, 24, skated in six games for the Steelheads earlier this season, picking up five points along the way. Included in the previous trip was a two-goal game against the Ontario Reign on October 26 at CenturyLink Arena in Boise. He has played one game at the AHL level this season after appearing in 12 with the Texas Stars at the end of last season.
The Dallas, TX, product is in his first full professional season after being selected in the 5th round of the NHL Entry Draft by the home-town Stars in 2007. As a senior at Colgate, Smith led the NCAA with 36 goals en route to being named his conference’s Most Valuable Player, a first-team NCAA All-American and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, college hockey’s version of the Heisman Trophy.
Smith is expected to be in the lineup Wednesday for the Steelheads when they host the Alaska Aces at 7 PM in Boise.
