Former Stars’ goaltender Mike Smith was strong in net for Phoenix, stopping all 17 Dallas shots he faced. But it was undisciplined play from the Stars that led to
The Stars started the game with lots of jump in their step, and tested Smith in net early. Dallas managed just six shots on net in the 1st period, but many of them were good scoring chances, including big opportunities by Brendan Morrow and Jamie Benn. Richard Bachman, making his first start of the year in net for the Stars, bailed the team out of a couple of mistakes, including a point-blank shot by Raffi Torres. The teams skated to a 0-0 tie after one period.
The Coyotes got on the board midway through the 2nd period, after Smith sprang his team out of the zone on an odd-man rush. Lauri Korpikoski dropped the puck for Nick Johnson who unleashed a hard wrister and beat Bachman to make it 1-0.
The Stars managed just three shots in the 2nd period, one of which was from their own defensive zone.
Dallas started the 3rd period much like they did the 1st: with lots of energy to their game. Jaromir Jagr was left open in the slot and tested a stickless Smith in net with a wicked wrist shot, but the Phoenix netminder made a great save and stopped play.
Phoenix extended their lead just a couple of minutes later. The Coyotes were on the power play, as Stars forward Michael Ryder was in the penalty box for boarding. Derek Morris put the puck on net with a hard slapshot from the point, which was redirected by Martin Hanzal and saved by Bachman. Mikkel Boedker grabbed the rebound in front of the net and put it past the now defenseless Bachman, making it 2-0 Phoenix.
The Stars got several opportunities as the 3rd period, but Smith played solid net, turning away all chances. Bachman, for his part, held the Stars in the game, making several great stops in the 3rd. Bachman finished the game with 32 saves on 34 shots.
The Stars will need to shake off this loss quickly, as they try to right the ship on Monday when they visit Colorado to take on the Avalanche. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 PM CT.
