It’s no secret the Stars have struggled in Buffalo this millenium. It’s ironic that the place all Stars fans remember with such fondness, thanks to Brett Hull’s triple-OT win in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals, now is a source of (at least budding) frustration and loss. After Wednesday’s 5-3 loss, Dallas is 0-4-1 in Buffalo since winning the Cup there in ‘99.

As far as what the loss means in a more immediate way, let’s look at how things shook out last night. Phoenix beat Vancouver in the shootout, getting two more points to strengthen their hold on the #5 spot in the West. Los Angeles fell to Chicago in OT, picking up a point, but keeping them two points behind the Coyotes. Dallas sits in 10th place – five points out of a playoff spot. The win would have been nice to close some ground on Calgary for that 8th spot, but considering the Stars only picked up two points out of a possible six on this most recent road trip, it’s not bad, either. And when you consider the teams they played on this trip are all 1st place teams in their divisions in the Eastern Conference, I can’t imagine many were thinking they’d pull more than two points out of this swing.

Now, some other thoughts out of this game:

Tyler Myers: I have to agree with Ralph Strangis and Razor, after finally getting to see this guy play – he seems to have it all. Size, speed, good hands, and a good hockey sense. After setting a career high with his 4-point night against the Stars, he has certainly showed why he’s the front-running candidate for this year’s Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.

Turco Strong Again: If you look at the final score and nothing else, it’s easy to assume that Marty Turco struggled. But, let’s take a look at the stats. The Stars were outshot in the game, 42-20. They were outshot 16-9 in the first period, 15-5 in the second period (when the game was tied 3-3 and was essentially a “new game”) and 11-6 in the final frame, when they should have been marshaling their energies and talents for a surge against a Sabres team that was just hungrier. The only reason they stayed in the hunt was the strong play of Turco in net. The defense continues to be a weak spot for the Stars, and several Sabres forwards were allowed to walk to the net without much challenge. That will have to improve if the Stars want to turn things around in the final 16 games of the regular season

Lack of Offense: On this three-game roadtrip, the Stars were outshot 128-76. They’ve been outshot in every game since the Olympic Break ended. In that stretch, they’ve gone 1-4-0, and that win was stolen by Marty. Coach Marc Crawford is going to have to juggle some lineups and find some better chemistry, because it’s pretty clear what has been going on, offensively, isn’t working too well. I have a feeling there will be an emphasis on just putting the puck on net. Any shot is a good shot when you’ve only averaged 23 shots in your last two games.

The Stars will now come home for a six-game stretch, and look to find some offensive production and some stronger defensive play. Los Angeles is first up on Friday, and the Stars are winless against the Kings, going 0-2-2 against them this season. The two OT games were played in LA and the losses were handed to the Stars here in Dallas. In those two games, the Stars were outscored 9-2, so finding some offense on Friday would be quite helpful.

Mark Derlago scored a hat trick, and Captain Marty Flichel played in his 400th game as a Steelhead in the win.

Victoria scored twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Chad Painchaud scored shortly after a faceoff in the Idaho zone at 10:10, and less than three minutes later, Randall Gelech walked in on a breakaway to beat Idaho’s Rejean Beauchemin top-shelf at 12:49.

The Steelheads scored twice in the second period to even the score heading into the third frame. Near the end of a shift, Mark Derlago tossed a puck to the front of the Victoria net from the left wing corner, and the puck took a bounce off of goalie Matt Keetley and into the net for Derlago’s 32nd of the year.

Derlago tied the game for Idaho when he scored on a five-on-three power play after receiving a backdoor pass from Evan Barlow off to the right side of the Victoria net at 15:58 of the second period. Marty Flichel also assisted on the goal, as Flichel was playing in his 400th career game as an Idaho Steelhead, which includes time in the team’s era in the WCHL.

The Steelheads pulled away from Victoria in the third period, as Kevin DeVergilio scored the eventual game-winner at 2:02 of the period. He held a puck at the bottom of the left circle during a delayed penalty situation, faked Keetley, and slid a puck across the goal line along the ice to give Idaho a 3-2 advantage. Brendan Milnamow and Matt McKnight tallied the assists on DeVergilio’s 15th of the season.

At 12:46 of the period, Adam Huxley wheeled up the right wing and let a shot fly from the circle. Keetley made the save, but Huxley stayed with the puck, wrapped it around the net, and scored to give Idaho a 4-2 lead. Huxley’s 6th of the season was assisted by Milnamow.

At 14:27, Derlago completed his hat trick on the power play when he one-timed a pass from the top of the right circle into the net. Flichel and Barlow assisted on Derlago’s 34th.

Rejean Beauchemin stopped 19 of 21 Victoria shots in just over 45 minutes of work to improve to 22-8-2. Beauchemin gave way to Richard Bachman, who made two saves on two shots in 14:52 of action in the third period. Matt Keetley, playing in his first game for Victoria since being reassigned to the Salmon Kings from AHL Abbotsford, stopped 31 of 36 Idaho shots. He is now 2-2-0.

The Steelheads and Salmon Kings will play on Friday night in the middle game of the current three-game set. The puck drops at 8:00 PM MST. Idaho returns home to play Utah on March 16th.

The win advanced Allen’s record to 39-15-4 (83 points).

Goalie David McKee started in tonight’s contest. Midway through the first period, the light above the Americans’ net went on, but the referee quickly indicated that the puck did not cross the line, and play continued. The Americans skated to the other end, and rookie Tobias Whelan put the biscuit in the basket. Whelan’s goal was the first time that the Americans scored at NYTEX Sports Centre in the first period. After 20 minutes of play, Allen had a 1-0 lead.

The Brahmas tied the game shortly into the middle frame. Forward Scott Thauwald scored at 2:22 to put Texas on the board. The Americans fired back when Jarrett Lukin redirected Tyler Wooddisse’s shot from the point to regain the Americans’ one-goal advantage with 5:37 remaining in the period. Allen headed into the third period with its first lead on the road against the Brahmas, a 2-1 advantage.

Texas scored early in the third period as well. Defenseman Kevin Seibel registered a power play tally when McKee was screened at 1:39. With 6:05 remaining in the regulation, Allen scored another gorgeous goal on a deflected shot with the extra-man advantage. This time, Tyler Shelast tipped blueliner Ryan Fairbarn’s shot into the cage to give Allen a 3-2 lead. The Brahmas responded roughly two minutes later with a wraparound goal from Matt Pierce to tie the game 3-3. The game was forced into overtime.

The teams continued to put the heat on the goalies, but neither faltered in the extra five-minute period. Allen headed into the shootout winning only one out of three contests that were forced past overtime against Texas. Justin Bowers and Colton Yellow Horn popped the puck in the net for goals in the shootout, while McKee shut down everyone but Jason Deitsch.

Allen ended the season with a 4-3-2 record against the Brahmas this season and advanced their record when leading after two periods to 27-1-0.

McKee had 38 saves tonight, and Allen had 35 shots on net.

Prior to the game, Allen waived forwards Mick Berge and Maxim Chamberland. The club also signed amateur George Bradley. Bradley played for Brock University in Canada for the past four seasons.

The Americans travel to Rapid City for a set of weekend games Friday and Saturday before closing out the regular season with three straight home games March 17, 19 and 20. Allen has clinched home ice for the Conference Semi-Finals of the 2010 Ray Miron’s President’s Cup. Their first home playoff games will be the weekend of March 26.

The box score is available on Pointstreak.com: http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/boxscore.html?gameid=1067858

The Rivermen opened the scoring at 9:11 of the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. The Stars countered with 2:51 left in the period, tying the game 1-1. Right wing Colton Sceviour scored on a breakaway pass from defenseman Dan Jancevski, sending a backhanded shot through the legs of Peoria goalie Joe Fallon. Sceviour’s seventh goal of the season was the team’s third shorthanded goal this year.

Peoria went ahead 2-1 with a power-play goal in the second period. Winger Pascal Pelletier sent a backhanded shot into the net after finding a rebound from Derek Armstrong’s shot. Pelletier’s 13th goal of the year came at 5:21. Texas tied the game 2-2 with a power-play goal just 1:33 later. Winger Francis Wathier scored from behind the goal-line, bouncing the puck off of Fallon’s shoulder. Maxime Fortunus and Aaron Gagnon tallied assists on Wathier’s 12th goal of the year.

The Stars broke the 2-2 tie at 5:26 of the third period, taking a 3-2 lead. Center Aaron Gagnon found a rebound in front of the Peoria net and sent a shot past Fallon. Defenseman Andrew Hutchinson and Wathier each added an assist on Gagnon’s game-winning tally, his 18th goal this season.

Every Wednesday, Big D Hockey will present a report on the Allen Americans. This will include any relevant news or noteworthy stats from the last week’s games, as well as a look at the upcoming games and then the team itself. Through these reports, we hope to offer you an insider’s look at the Dallas Stars’ CHL affiliate and some of the players who may one day play in Big D.

Looking back over the last week of games, we can see the Allen Americans did their job in making sure they had at least the #2 slot in the Southern Conference for the playoffs.

The weekend started rough for the Americans; On Tuesday they began their second straight stretch of four games in five days. The first two games were on the road; Allen picked up a solid 3-2 win in Bossier-Shreveport on Tuesday. David McKee made his first start in net for the Americans (and his first CHL start as well), and picked up his first win. The team then travelled to Laredo to play the Bucks on Thursday. McKee made 40 saves for Allen, but he faced an onslaught of shots from the hungry Bucks, who picked up their first win against the Americans, 6-1.

The Americans picked up 3 more points over the weekend, with a 5-2 win on Friday and a 3-2 overtime loss on Saturday; both games were against the Mississippi RiverKings. By taking a point in their final game of the weekend, Allen assured that they will finish no lower than 2nd in the Southern Conference this season.

But, as mentioned many times in game stories and video clips, Allen Americans head coach Dwight Mullins isn’t satisfied with that. After Saturday’s game, he looked frustrated and upset about the opportunity for additional points that was passed up. But now, all they can do is look ahead. And, what’s ahead is a very important three-game road trip, including a game tonight against the Texas Brahmas and then two games this weekend in South Dakota against the Rapid City Rush. The Americans then head back to the AEC to finish up the regular season with three more games.

Headed into action on Wednesday, the Americans trailed Odessa in the standings by 9 points. And, with only six games left in the regular season, they will need to pretty much win their schedule outright in order to have a chance at the top spot. The Jackalopes also have six games remaining – two against Missouri, two against Laredo, one in Amarillo and one at home against Rapid City. The Jacks just need a win and a tie in that stretch in order to ice the top spot.

But, as far as first-round matchups go, that doesn’t really matter much. The Americans’ opponent will most likely be either Laredo or Texas. And depending on the day you check the standings, the opponent Allen faces flip-flops. The Bucks and Brahmas will be duking it out, and we won’t have a real clear picture of the final playoff scenario for another week and a half.

Past Week’s Transactions:

3/2/10 Maxim Chamberland, F – signed contract.
3/4/10 Chris Whitley, G – returned by Lake Erie (AHL).
3/5/10 Tyler Shelast, F – assigned by Dallas (NHL) from Texas (AHL).
3/8/10 Maxim Chamberland, F – placed on waivers.
3/8/10 Mick Berge, F – placed on waivers.
3/8/10 George Bradley, D – signed contract.

The Central Hockey League released their annual “Best of the Best” poll results today. Every year, the CHL sends out ballots to players, coaches and broadcasters, to find the best of the best, on and off the ice.

This year, the Allen Americans were recipients of four of the top honors – Best Team Logo, Best Team Uniform, Best City, and Best Host Hotel. The team’s press release about the honors was sure to recognize all of the contributing elements:

***

In Allen’s first year of existence, the club took home the top spot for Best Team Logo, Best Team Uniforms, Best City and Best Host Hotel.

The Americans take pride in their logo that spotlights the colors of the City of Allen and Collin County (red, white and blue). The team partnered with Chase Hargrove of Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers who combined a star, shield and flying puck to design a unique, edgy logo that reflects the patriotism of Allen and the affiliation with the Dallas Stars.

The credit for Best Team Uniform is due to Americans Owner and President Steve Duchesne and Head Coach and General Manager Dwight Mullins. The recognition from league peers is the third time that Americans uniforms have been acknowledged this season. The Hockey News has featured Allen’s jerseys twice, once for its clean blue jerseys and once for the throwback Dallas Black Hawk sweaters the club wore in its first North Texas Vintage Game Series against Metroplex rival Texas.

Being named Best City is a great tribute to the City of Allen, Mayor Steve Terrell and the city staff that have been so supportive of the expansion club since its inception.

Allen’s official hotel is the Courtyard Marriott, adjacent to the Allen Event Center and located in The Village at Allen. The hotel opened in January and features a customer-focused design that allows guests to be more comfortable and productive and has 15,000 square feet of flexible meeting space.

***

In addition to these first-overall honors, several Americans players and staff members were recognized in the top three of several categories. They are as follows:

Justin Bowers – Best Overall Player – 3rd overall (three 2nd place votes)

Bruce Graham – Most Underrated Player – 3rd overall (two 1st place, one 2nd place)

- Best Player on Face-offs – 3rd overall (two 1st place, two 2nd place)

Chris Kaufman – Best Defensive Defenseman – 2nd overall (three 1st place, one 2nd place, one 3rd place)

Ice Angels – Best Cheerleaders/Dance Team – 2nd overall (five 1st place, six 2nd place, one 3rd place)

Concessions – Best Arena Concessions – 3rd overall (one 1st place, three 2nd place, one 3rd place)

The full list of winners in all categories can be downloaded at the CHL’s website.

Every Monday, Big D Hockey will present a report on the Idaho Steelheads. This will include any relevant news or noteworthy stats from the weekends’ games, as well as a look at the upcoming games and then the team itself. Through these reports, we hope to offer you an insider’s look at the Dallas Stars’ ECHL affiliate and some of the players who may one day play in Big D.

First off, let’s take a look at this last weekend. The Steelies hosted the Bakersfield Condors for a three-game series on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. After managing just a point in their 3-1 loss on Wednesday, Idaho exploded for 12 goals in the next two games. Mark Derlago led the team with 8 points in the series (4G, 4A) and a +6 rating. Tyler Spurgeon was right behind him with 6 points (3G, 3A) and a +6 rating as well.

After Steelheads goalie Rejean Beauchemin allowed 2 goals on 17 shots in Wednesday’s game, Richard Bachman came in for Saturday and Sunday’s game, posting a shutout on Saturday and stopping 36 of 39 shots in the 2 games.

Forward Mark McCutcheon was suspended by the league for two games on Monday, because of an illegal hit in Friday night’s game against the Condors. McCutcheon sat out on Saturday night, so he will only miss one of the upcoming games (Wednesday night’s game in Victoria).

Idaho now sits atop the Pacific Division by 15 points. With 15 games left in the season (and 3 games in hand on the second-place Victoria Salmon Kings), they’re certainly in a fantastic position. But, it would be far too early to say they had things locked up.

Looking ahead this week, the Idaho Steelheads will be busy, as they will visit the Salmon Kings for three games on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Victoria is 31-23-4-2 on the year so far, but only 3-6-0-1 over the last 10 games, so they’ve been struggling a bit.

I think Idaho has to feel good going up against the S-Kings right now. But, they don’t want to assume it’s going to be a cake walk; Victoria is a very good team, and they’re getting some help in net right now, just as they need it.

On Monday, Matt Keetley was assigned to the Salmon Kings from the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat by the Calgary Flames. This is Keetley’s second stint in Victoria – this past November, Keetley posted a 2-1-0 record with a 0.965 save percentage, a 1.01 goals against average, and two shutouts for the Salmon Kings. Keetley was then named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for November 9th – 15th. If he can bring that same effort for this series against the Steelies, it’s going to be a very interesting stretch.

Last Week’s Transactions:

3/1/10 Steve Oleksy, D – activated off IR
3/1/10 Weston Tardy, D – placed on the 3-day IR
3/7/10 Matt McKnight, F – activated off IR
3/7/10 Ashton Rome, F – placed on the 3-day IR
3/8/10 Weston Tardy, D – transferred to the 7-day IR

The Stars win over the Capitals tonight was necessary. This team needs their morale boosted in the locker room, the faith in their goalie restored, and the points in the standings. The last was an immediate improvement, but if they can take their successes from tonight and move forward with them, it should go towards addressing the first two issues.

Some of the things I really liked about tonight’s win:

Winning in Washington: Dallas went into the Verizon Center, where the Capitals (the league’s best team) were 25-3-3 (the league’s best home record) and beat them. Not only beat them, but came back from two goals down to beat them. This is a point that Marc Crawford and the Stars’ coaching staff better be echoing again and again. Maybe something along the lines of: “You’ve beat the best team in the league where they play best. The rest is easier, guys…go out and do it!”

Marty’s Record Setting Night: 49 saves on 52 shots. 49 stops on guys like Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich. The Caps’ roster is full of assassins – on any night one of them is a threat to be a multiple-goal scorer. Washinton is averaging just under four goals per game, so allowing three may seem like a lot…but only allowing three to Washington? That’s a successful outing. Especially (as I mentioned before) in their barn.

Daley and Skrastins, Black and Blue: I’ll be the first to admit I’m not the biggest fan of Trevor Daley. But his performance in this game was fantastic. And Karlis Skrastins…well, he came in and did exactly what the Stars hoped he would do this year – play fantastic defense. Between the two of them, they had 13 blocks shots tonight (7 for Daley, 6 for Skrastins). No one else on the team had more than two, but only seven players had 0. Most of those players were the people you don’t want dropping to blocks shots anyway, so it shows you the all-around mentality on the ice. And that ‘take one for the team’ mentality was led by Daley and Skrastins tonight.

The Stars get right back on the road, traveling to Buffalo tonight for Wednesday’s game against the Sabres. They’ll have their work cut out for them again. This time, they’ll have to get pucks by US Olympic goaltender Ryan Miller, who is the winner of back-to-back games, including a 35-save performance on Sunday night against the Rangers. Tonight’s win against the Capitals is just what the Stars needed, though, going up against another challenging obstacle.
